Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, demanding intensified international pressure on Russia and warning that the conflict's destructive reach is extending well beyond Ukraine's borders.
Russia's War Machine and Human Cost
Zelenskyy told the assembly that Russian President Vladimir Putin remains the sole driving force behind a war that has cost Russia nearly 249,000 killed or seriously wounded in the first eight months of 2025 alone. He described the campaign to seize Ukraine's Donetsk region as a "crazy order" that Russian generals have pursued for almost five years, adding that the continued fighting is nothing short of madness.
The President also called Putin "Patient zero" and urged the world to "limit his room to act, limit his money, limit his war." He stressed that Kyiv's objective is not Russia's oil industry itself, but Moscow's ability to finance and sustain the brutal conflict, warning that trade with Russia effectively gives the war more time to drag on.
Spillover Threats and North Korean Involvement
Zelenskyy warned that the war's impact is spreading, pointing to North Korean forces fighting alongside Russia and suffering heavy losses. He argued that Pyongyang is receiving military benefits in exchange for its involvement, including improved missile and drone capabilities, while Russia simultaneously threatens Moldova, Poland, the Baltic States, and shows no respect for sovereignty in the South Caucasus and Central Asia.
Describing the situation as a war that was not prevented or stopped in time, the President said it "keeps spreading and spreads evil with it." He added that the more freedom Putin has to act, the more dangerous the world becomes for everyone else, framing the conflict as a growing global security crisis rather than a regional dispute.
Defence Innovation and a Call for Peace
In response to Russia launching thousands of missiles and tens of thousands of attack drones since the start of 2025, Ukraine is expanding interceptor drone production and developing new air defence capabilities through a European anti-ballistic initiative known as 'Freya.' Zelenskyy presented this growing defence industry as a potential security resource for other nations, highlighting cooperation agreements on drone technology and integrated defence systems.
Looking ahead, the President warned that rapid advances in military technology and artificial intelligence could make future conflicts even more dangerous. He urged the international community to end existing wars before warfare enters this new technological era, while reaffirming that Ukrainians did not choose this war but are defending their country, families, independence and freedom.
