The new laws include the 'super RIGI' investment regime, which offers foreign companies a minimal tax rate and a 30-year guarantee against regulatory change, specifically naming AI datacentres. Another failed bill would have removed most restrictions on foreigners buying land. A final decree would force civilian government departments to share vast amounts of personal data with state intelligence services.
Marino described the reforms as a 'technofascist legislative package' aimed at entrenching the power of US tech billionaires. There is no evidence that Thiel has directly advocated for these laws, but he held closed-door meetings with Milei and key presidential advisers in the months after moving to Buenos Aires.
Argentina as a 'Laboratory' for Tech Power
Cecilia Nicolini, who represents Argentina at the Mercosur regional parliament, said: 'It's not just that [Thiel] chose Argentina in terms of, it's a secure place to live in a world that is facing a number of wars, etcetera. But really, behind it, I think there is a clear plan. And it is related to reforms that Milei is trying to pass, with some success in some cases, and in others, backlash.'
Deputies have also questioned whether Palantir, the company Thiel co-founded, holds undisclosed contracts with the state. Milei himself wrote an article in the Financial Times advocating 'non-human corporations' — entities operated by AI agents or robots — echoing predictions from OpenAI's Sam Altman about a future run by AI-owned companies.
