Somalia's Defence Minister H.E. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi has visited Pakistan's Global Industrial & Defence Solutions (GIDS) headquarters and the National Defence University (NDU) as part of an official high-level delegation visit to Islamabad.
GIDS Headquarters Visit
At the Global Industrial & Defence Solutions (GIDS) headquarters, the Somali delegation was received by the company's Chief Executive Officer, Mr Asad Kamal. Mr Kamal provided a detailed briefing on GIDS' capabilities in defence manufacturing, military technology, and advanced defence solutions to the visiting Somali officials.
The two sides discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in the defence industry and military capability development. They also explored how Somalia could benefit from GIDS' expertise and advanced defence technologies to enhance the country's security posture.
National Defence University Engagement
The Somali Defence Minister also visited the National Defence University (NDU) of Pakistan, where he was received by the University's President, Lieutenant General Babar Iftikhar. During the meeting, the Minister received a briefing on the University's role in higher defence education, strategic studies, security research, and the development of senior military leadership.
The visit to the NDU highlighted potential avenues for collaboration in defence education and strategic studies between Somalia and Pakistan. The exchange underscored the importance of building institutional capacity within Somalia's armed forces through partnerships with established regional defence institutions.
High-Level Delegation Composition
The Somali Defence Minister was accompanied during the visits by the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to Pakistan, H.E. Sheikh Noor Mohamed Hassan. The delegation also included the Commanders of the Somali National Armed Forces' Navy and Air Force, reflecting the high-level nature of the diplomatic mission.
This official visit to Pakistan demonstrates Somalia's commitment to strengthening bilateral defence ties with regional partners. The presence of senior military commanders alongside the Defence Minister and Ambassador signals a coordinated effort to explore defence cooperation opportunities.
