Security Challenges in Northeast and Sweida
In the northeast, Mazloum Abdi was appointed as a Presidential Adviser three days after announcing the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces, while a former SDF fighter was abducted and killed, triggering demonstrations in Kurdish-majority towns. On 1 September, approximately 50 families displaced for over a decade returned voluntarily from Ras al-Ain to al-Hasakeh city.
The situation in Sweida remains deeply concerning, with renewed clashes between Internal Security Forces and the National Guard affiliated with Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri leaving casualties on 1 September. On 4 September, Druze notable Atef Hneidi was abducted and expelled by armed men, and only around 150 of approximately 14,000 eligible students participated in an exceptional examination granted by Presidential Decree.
