Venezuela's telecom regulator announced the unblocking of 17 news websites that had been restricted for years, a move timed to coincide with the second round of peace talks in Caracas between the interim government and opposition leaders.
A Partial Unblocking Under New Leadership
Under the administration of Nicolas Maduro, hundreds of national and international websites were censored, a practice that continued until his ouster in January. The decision to lift restrictions on 17 sites came as part of a broader effort to reduce polarization following the political transition.
Gustavo Villapol, the Deputy Communications Minister, stated on state television that the government could no longer use communication for interests external to the nation's vital meaning, framing the unblocking as a necessary step toward a normalized information environment.
Opposition and Civil Society React with Cautious Optimism
Dinorah Figuera, head of the opposition delegation, celebrated the decision on X, declaring that informing without fear must be a matter of compliance with the law rather than a privilege, and warned that many more media outlets still needed to return.
Luis Ernesto Blanco, editorial director of Runrunes, described the move as an official acknowledgment that public debate had been stifled, while Victor Amaya, who runs the TalCual portal blocked in mid-2024, expressed skepticism about whether all censored sites would eventually become accessible again.
Significant Gaps Remain in Restored Access
VE Sin Filtro, a digital rights organization, confirmed that 188 websites remain inaccessible, including 79 news portals, meaning the vast majority of previously blocked sites have not yet been restored to Venezuelan users.
The TalCual portal alone lost 60% of its audience and much of its advertising revenue during the blockade, and Reporters Without Borders warned last month that repression and a hostile legal environment had severely stifled independent journalism in the country.
