SCO Summit Marks 25th Anniversary with Major Global Participation

The SCO summit in Bishkek is taking place this year as the organization celebrates its 25th anniversary since its founding, adding symbolic weight to the gathering. The bloc now represents nearly 40% of the world's population and approximately 25% of global GDP, underscoring its growing geopolitical influence.

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian is participating in the summit and is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Vladimir Putin. Iran became a full member of the SCO in 2023, and the Tehran-Moscow relationship has deepened significantly in defence and politics.

Russia and China Strengthen Ties Amid Western Pressure

Russia and China have significantly increased cooperation in energy, trade, military, and international politics in recent years, calling for a multipolar world order. Although the SCO officially states it is not a military alliance, Moscow and Beijing use the summit to present their views on a new world order and Western interference.

The Bishkek meeting is taking place amid intensifying economic competition between the United States and China. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Washington wants G20 countries to review trade conditions with China, criticizing Beijing's trade imbalance and its efforts to export domestic economic problems through increased exports.

Broader SCO Membership and Key Attendees

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is also expected to participate in the summit, although Turkey is not a full SCO member. The SCO currently has 10 full members and 15 additional countries as 'partners in dialogue', including Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

India and Pakistan are full members of the SCO and are also participating in the summit. The gathering brings together a diverse group of nations, reflecting the organization's broad reach and its role as a platform for dialogue among major global powers.
