Counter-terrorism police in the United Kingdom are investigating whether there is a connection to Iran after officers discovered explosives on three vans parked near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on Sunday. The incident, which prompted the evacuation of 85 households in the nearby village of Whelford, has raised fresh concerns about the security of British military sites hosting US operations.
The Incident and Immediate Response
Armed officers detained five men after receiving an emergency call about three suspicious vehicles heading toward the air base. A local resident, who was aware of a lockdown due to a terror threat, spotted the three white vans blocking a rural road and a large group of men wearing hoods and balaclavas before alerting authorities. She described the situation as astonishing that it was a plucky amateur who spotted the unusual activity and raised the alarm.
Some 85 households in the nearby village of Whelford were advised to evacuate while army bomb disposal experts were called in to examine the three large white vans stopped on the road. Broadcast aerial footage showed a bomb disposal robot moving around the vehicles, two of which had their rear doors open. Police believed the incident had been contained and a 400-metre cordon was put in place, with armed officers guarding the entrance to the base.
Political and Diplomatic Reactions
Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood accused Iran and Russia of using proxies to carry out criminal activities on their behalf on UK territory, adding to the growing tension surrounding the incident. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting cautioned that it would be irresponsible to speculate, asking the public for forbearance to give police and security services the time and space to do their job. He said as soon as they could keep the public informed, they would.
US President Donald Trump told reporters they had been looking to do big damage at the base in southwest England, adding that they had them under view for a long time and got them. He said the US and UK had been working together on the incident. Earlier this month, reports said British military sites had been targeted by drones more than 300 times over the past year, highlighting the escalating threat to UK soil.
