The Somali ambassador to Kenya hosted UN-Habitat officials in Nairobi to advance joint work on housing, urban development and durable solutions to displacement, ahead of a planned Somali Housing Breakfast.
Ambassador Hosts UN-Habitat Country Office
H.E. Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to Kenya, received the UN-Habitat Somalia Country Office in Nairobi for a high-level meeting on urban development and housing cooperation. The session was designed to strengthen bilateral collaboration between Mogadishu and the United Nations agency on Somalia's broader development priorities.
The discussions centred on advancing Somalia's urban development, infrastructure, livelihoods, local government and housing agenda through a coordinated partnership framework. Both sides agreed that sustained engagement would be essential to translate shared goals into concrete, on-the-ground progress across the country.
Housing Integrated into National Transformation Plan
A key focus of the meeting was integrating housing more effectively into Somalia's National Transformation Plan, with the aim of strengthening durable solutions to displacement and supporting sustainable recovery for affected communities. The agenda reflects a growing recognition that housing policy must be central to the country's long-term development strategy.
Participants emphasised that housing cannot be treated as a standalone sector but must be woven into the wider economic and social recovery framework. This approach is intended to ensure that reconstruction efforts deliver lasting benefits to households and local economies across Somalia.
Somali Housing Breakfast to Launch Integrated Policy
The meeting also covered preparations for the upcoming Somali Housing Breakfast, an event that will bring together the Government, development partners, the private sector, banks and other stakeholders to build momentum towards an integrated Housing Policy for Somalia. The initiative is being developed under the Africa Affordable Housing Compact in partnership with UN-Habitat.
The Ambassador expressed readiness to facilitate continued collaboration and support efforts to translate the discussions into coordinated action towards sustainable and affordable housing in Somalia. He underscored that the Somali Housing Breakfast would serve as a critical platform for aligning donor, government and private sector commitments around a unified housing strategy.
