He argued that the UN, which was founded to defend territorial sovereignty, had failed to act on the dispute.
Milei declared that Argentina would not wait for the UN or the international community to fulfil their mandate. He stated: 'Argentina is not going to sit around waiting for the UN and the international community to live up to their own mandate. We're going to take matters into our own hands.' He also accused the UK of flouting a 1976 UN resolution that ordered both parties to desist from unilateral action on the islands.
Oil Exploration and the Sea Lion Project at the Heart of the Dispute
The president focused his criticism on the Sea Lion project, a major offshore oil development in the North Falkland Basin, describing the exploitation of the territory's resources as an 'unlawful act.' He said Argentina would not remain indifferent to those who exploit resources under illegal foreign occupation, and his government has begun sanctions proceedings against more than 60 companies and individuals linked to the project.
The Sea Lion project is a joint venture between an Israel-based energy company and a London-listed oil and gas exploration company, with the Falkland Islands government having approved its field development and production plans. Milei argued that the principle of self-determination should not apply to the islands, claiming the population was 'implanted by the occupying power on a territory whose sovereignty is in dispute.'
Broader Geopolitical Context and British Reassurance
The speech comes as the dispute enters a new phase, with US President Donald Trump last month saying he was reviewing the United States' neutral position on the Falklands. The issue was discussed this week in a first meeting between Trump and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who said: 'The clear position is: we will stand firm in the face of any threats. We will defend the right of the Falkland Islanders to self-determination and to remain British.'
Milei called on the UK to resume negotiations to find a peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute as required by international law, while also labelling the Malvinas a 'national cause' for Argentina. The conflict that erupted in 1982 ended after 74 days with the surrender of Argentine forces, costing 649 Argentine, 255 British and three Falkland Island lives. A 2013 referendum saw 99.8% of voters choose to remain a British territory.
