Dozens of masked demonstrators blocked all roads to Britain's busiest ferry port on Saturday, creating a 6.4km traffic jam and disrupting passengers and cargo heading to France before access was restored around midday.

Several dozen men dressed in black and wearing balaclavas stood across a major road near the port, with one clip showing demonstrators linking arms and shouting 'stop the boats' while facing a line of police. The Port of Dover confirmed that all traffic in and out was 'stopped due to an ongoing public order incident' as the protest unfolded.
Video footage posted on social media captured the scene, showing the crowd blocking routes used by ferries connecting southern England to northern France. Local police said they were 'engaging with the protesters' as the disruption continued through the morning.
Government Condemns Disruption Amid Channel Migration Tensions
The UK government condemned the action, saying it went beyond peaceful protest, while the Labour Party stated that 'the right to peaceful protest is fundamental to our democracy, but we condemn the behaviour in Dover and the travel disruption it has caused.' Conservative councillor Chris Vinson described the protest as 'illegal migration-related' and noted the intimidating nature of the masked demonstrators.
Mike Tapp, a Labour lawmaker representing Dover, criticised 'idiots coming to Dover to cause disruption' and suggested the protesters were unaware that small boat crossings had already fallen by more than 40% this year. The National Highways agency confirmed the protest caused a 6.4km traffic jam on Saturday morning.
Port Access Restored as P&O Offers Alternative Crossings
P&O Ferries announced just before midday that 'access to the Port of Dover has now been restored' and said passengers who missed their ferry would be offered the next available crossing. The port, located about 110km southeast of London, handled more than 9 million passengers and 2 million freight vehicles in 2025.
Far-right activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, who uses the name Tommy Robinson, wrote on X that 'patriots have mobilised to close down the port,' while Nigel Farage of Reform UK had branded asylum seekers 'an invasion' in a Friday speech. The centre-left Labour government said the number of boats carrying migrants across the Channel was the lowest this summer since 2019.
