President Donald Trump has asked the Smithsonian Institution to place a new 30-foot statue of George Washington outside the National Museum of American History and to mount a special exhibit running through the 300th anniversary of Washington's birth in February 2032.
Statue and Exhibit Requests
Trump wants an 11-foot statue of Washington — the same one used at the recent Freedom 250 IndyCar race — installed in the museum's Flag Hall for Constitution Day on September 17. He also wants a 30-foot statue to replace the existing 'Infinity' sculpture by New York artist Jose de Rivera, which was commissioned by the federal government and installed in 1967.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote: 'He is easily America's Greatest Hero. Without him, our Country and our Freedoms wouldn't exist.' He also complained that the museum does not mention Washington's crossing of the Delaware River during the Revolutionary War and called for a 'Center for American Heroes' instead of the former Center for Restorative History.
Legal and Institutional Constraints
It is unclear whether Trump has the authority to order the Smithsonian to make these changes. The institution operates outside the executive branch and is governed by a Board of Regents that includes Vice President JD Vance, Chief Justice John Roberts, bipartisan lawmakers and private citizens.
In March, Trump issued an executive order targeting funding for programs that advanced 'divisive narratives' and 'improper ideology.' The White House also published a lengthy report this year criticizing the institution for not highlighting Washington and other founders enough.
Broader Efforts to Remake the National Landscape
Statues have been a consistent theme in Trump's efforts to reshape Washington, D.C. He has ordered signs installed in front of the U.S. history museum claiming some exhibits are inaccurate, and he has installed a statue of Washington in his remodeled Rose Garden patio.
Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch announced this week that he is stepping down at the end of the year. Trump has also proposed building a park along the Potomac River to display statues of 250 prominent Americans.
