President Donald Trump will formalize a new security agreement with the prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland in New York on Tuesday during the annual U.N. General Assembly, granting the United States permanent control over Greenland's security and defense needs.
Deal Grants Permanent U.S. Security Control
The agreement gives the United States permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland, completely addressing U.S. concerns about the territory. It explicitly guarantees the U.S. the complete ability to do what it deems necessary to secure and defend the American continent.
Under the deal, only the U.S. and its allies can make sensitive investments in Greenland, eliminating the previous status quo in which adversaries had been investing in sensitive sectors without investment screening.
European Leaders Welcome Agreement
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she is pleased with the prospect of a good agreement that strengthens common security in the Arctic and North Atlantic area, recognizing the sovereignty of the Kingdom and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen added that long-term uncertainty will hopefully be replaced by a binding agreement that strengthens security in the Arctic and North Atlantic, noting this is important at a time when the security policy situation in the Arctic has changed.
Trump Plans Large Military Buildup
Trump said the U.S. will immediately begin the process of developing a large military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many. The island is home to the U.S. Pituffik Space Base, where about 150 American troops are stationed.
Trump has argued the Arctic island is vital to his Golden Dome anti-missile concept and that the current U.S. presence is insufficient to defend Greenland should Russia or China try to take it over, asserting only the U.S. can keep it from encroachment.
