President Defends Son's Acceptance of Gift
When asked in the Oval Office whether it was appropriate for his son to accept the gift from Umar Kremlev, Trump said it was totally allowed and that many people host parties. He added that Trump Jr. did not want to keep the gesture and that he heard his son had paid Kremlev back, though he offered no proof of the repayment.
Trump later told a reporter that he had heard the story and asked about it. He said Trump Jr. replied, No, I'm paying it back, Dad, and that it happened a while ago. A reporter noted this was the first time the public had heard about the repayment.
Concerns Over Foreign Gifts and Conflicts of Interest
Lawmakers and critics have expressed concern over the gift, warning that accepting expensive presents from foreign adversaries could create severe conflicts of interest and potential leverage over the president's family. The issue has drawn attention from multiple quarters, raising questions about ethical boundaries.
When pressed about Kremlev's close ties to the Kremlin, Trump suggested his son did not do a background check. Kremlev's press office told ProPublica that Mr. Kremlev and Mr. Trump Jr. have a friendly relationship and first met a couple of years ago.
Trump Organization Has Not Provided Evidence
ABC News has asked the White House and The Trump Organization for evidence that Trump Jr. paid Kremlev back, but neither has provided proof. Trump Jr.'s wife Bettina Anderson said in an Instagram post that Kremlev very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for them after their wedding.
She described the gesture as an extraordinary gift from a friend and said they remain incredibly grateful. ABC News has also reached out to Kremlev for comment on the matter.
