Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed warnings from France's Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, insisting Russia poses no threat to Europe. The pair issued a joint statement on Saturday condemning Moscow's intimidation tactics, while Macron convened a crisis meeting to address hybrid security risks.
Kremlin Rejects French Warnings
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Monday that Russia poses no threat to France or any other European country. He said President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly affirmed this position and that Moscow has no disputes with European states that could lead to serious disagreements.
The comments came after Le Pen and Bardella issued a joint statement on Saturday warning Moscow against intimidation, threats, destabilisation, or psychological pressure. They said France would never tolerate a foreign power attempting to dictate its policies through such means.
Macron Addresses Hybrid Threats
French President Emmanuel Macron convened a crisis meeting last week with party leaders across the political spectrum, including Bardella. He briefed attendees on security threats from Russia and ordered measures to protect France's critical infrastructure from hybrid attacks.
Le Pen and Bardella cited the recent drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany, which German authorities blamed on Russia. They warned that Moscow could escalate tensions with countries supporting Ukraine, citing intelligence reports.
Russia's Election and Economic Moves
The pro-Putin United Russia party won a record supermajority in the State Duma, securing 355 out of 450 seats. France's Ministry of Foreign Affairs acknowledged the expected outcome but regretted that conditions for a free and democratic election were not met.
Russian authorities moved to seize businesses and assets of companies including Nestlé and France's Auchan. Le Pen and Bardella denounced the move as hostile to France's interests, while Macron's government condemned the unjustified placement of subsidiaries under temporary administration.
