Macron's Final UN Address Draws Fire
In his last speech as president at the UN General Assembly, Macron condemned the humanitarian situation in Gaza and called on nations to recommit to international law. He stated that 'What is our credibility worth if we remain inactive on Gaza? Some claim that peace has been achieved, but this has not opened up humanitarian deliveries. It is a spectacle that shames us all'.
Macron also turned his attention to the West Bank, asserting that 'Hamas has never struck in the West Bank'. He argued that daily violations there undermine the Palestinian people's right to exist, saying 'Look at what is happening in West Bank, where there are violations every day. In the name of what? Hamas has never struck in the West Bank. This every day makes it more impossible to achieve respect for the Palestinian people's legitimate right to exist'.
Israel and Allies Denounce the Remarks
Netanyahu's office responded swiftly, calling Macron's comments 'grotesque absurdity' and citing the killing of settler Netanel Shukrun on the eve of Yom Kippur. The statement added that 'Hamas terrorists carry out attacks against Jews almost every day. They have murdered countless Israeli civilians in Judea and Samaria'.
US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee also criticised Macron, writing on X that it was 'Hard to imagine a more out of touch with reality speech than Macron at UN'. He added that 'Hamas is an evil scourge and they have killed innocent American citizens'.
Background to the West Bank Tensions
The West Bank, seized by Israel in 1967, is home to the Palestinian Authority, which holds semi-autonomous civil rule in major urban areas while Israel controls most of the territory. The UN reported approximately six settler-related violent incidents against Palestinians or their property daily through mid-2026.
