Iranian authorities have closed a French language center in Tehran following a judicial order, prompting France to announce it will summon Iran's ambassador and take appropriate measures in response to the move.
The Closure and Legal Justification
Iranian officials announced on Sunday that the French Language Center (CLF), which was affiliated with the French embassy in Tehran, has been shut down after a prosecutor's office issued a judicial order. The judiciary's Mizan news website reported that the center, which had operated for years under the guise of language instruction, was closed as an illegal entity.
The Iranian judiciary accused the center of conducting illegal acts that violated diplomatic conventions and of abusing its status as a language training facility. It further alleged that the center sought to identify and build networks among the country's elite figures while facilitating their departure from the nation.
France Condemns the Move and Threatens Retaliation
The French Foreign Ministry stated it will summon Iran's ambassador and take appropriate measures in response to the closure. Spokesperson Pascal Confavreux called the action an unjustifiable and unacceptable attack on France's cultural presence in Iran, especially following the assault on two embassy staff members last July.
France has dismissed similar allegations in the past, claiming there has been a pattern of intimidation in recent months as it sought to increase support for and contact with Iran's civil society following the crackdown on protests at the beginning of this year.
Broader Diplomatic Tensions Between Paris and Tehran
Escalating tensions between the two nations include France's expulsion of two Iranian diplomats last month after they briefly detained and prohibited two French envoys. Iran accused the expelled diplomats of interfering in its internal affairs, adding that Tehran was also upset by a social media post from French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot commemorating the fourth anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi responded by calling the post 'crocodile tears' and accusing Paris of slaughtering 1.5 million Algerians during Algeria's war of independence. The two ministers are scheduled to meet on Tuesday at the United Nations' annual gathering of world leaders.
