Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are set to formalise a trilateral defence agreement in Jeddah on Friday, with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Army Chief Asim Munir and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan meeting Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to finalise the deal after months of negotiations.
High-Level Meeting in Jeddah
Pakistan's Foreign Office confirmed PM Shahbaz Sharif's official visit to Saudi Arabia from August 6 to 8, with a high-level delegation including Foreign Minister Asim Munir. The signing ceremony is scheduled for Friday in Jeddah, where the leaders will discuss regional and global issues alongside bilateral ties.
The new trilateral agreement will differ from the existing bilateral security agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed in September of the previous year. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia previously signed a strategic defence cooperation pact, but this new deal expands the framework to include Turkey as a third partner.
Turkey's Growing Defence Role
Turkey's defence industry has grown significantly, with companies like Esselsen (52nd), Baykar (66th) and Turkish Aerospace Industries (75th) ranking among the top 100 global defence companies according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) 2024 list. Turkey claims to meet 80% of its defence needs domestically, and its drones have played key roles in conflicts in Ukraine, Syria, Libya and other countries.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated in January that negotiations were underway between Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia regarding defence cooperation. Pakistan's Defence Production Minister Raza Hayat Haraj confirmed in January that a draft defence agreement was prepared after a year of negotiations, marking a significant step in the trilateral partnership.
Regional Diplomacy and Trust
Turkey believes that if Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt come together in one platform, many regional problems can be solved. Turkey believes that 80% of regional problems are caused by a lack of trust among regional powers, and if this trust deficit is removed, 80% of problems can be solved.
Turkey and Saudi Arabia relations deteriorated after the 2018 killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Istanbul consulate, but have gradually improved over the past two years. Turkey's diplomatic efforts include mediating between the US and Iran and playing an active role in ending the Gaza war, positioning it as a key player in Middle Eastern stability.
