U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the General Assembly that power has polarized the world and warned of a 'great fracture' dividing nations into rival blocs, urging leaders to cooperate on climate, artificial intelligence and inequality before his term ends on Dec. 31.
A multipolar world and the danger of fragmentation
Guterres described an 'irreversible move toward a multipolar world' and an 'extraordinary transfer of power' from governments to a handful of private corporations and individuals. He warned that the world risks 'the great fracture – the division of the world into two rival blocs with separate economic, technological and security systems.'
He rebuked might-makes-right thinking, telling superpowers that 'their power isn't so super' and that 'military power alone cannot security peace.' Guterres said no power can solve today's challenges alone and that the future depends on how the world addresses four great tests of power.
Climate crisis and artificial intelligence as existential threats
The U.N. chief called the climate crisis 'the most profound intergenerational power imbalance of all – one generation consuming the future of the next.' He said the world faces a near certain breach of the 1.5 degree Celsius safety threshold set 11 years ago, but noted that hope remains alongside the danger.
On artificial intelligence, Guterres said 'the danger is not technology. The danger is technology without accountability.' He urged AI rivals to come together 'to manage shared existential risks,' comparing it to Cold War rivals after World War II, and declared that 'Killer robots must have no place in our future.'
Inequality, reform and a farewell pledge for peace
Guterres stressed that inequality is a power problem, saying 'Never has humanity possessed so much wealth, knowledge and technological capability. Yet for billions, progress remains out of reach.' He lamented that most U.N. goals to end poverty and promote development won't be met by 2030, and called for urgent reform of the 81-year-old United Nations.
He urged leaders to commit to the wide-ranging reform package adopted by the U.N.'s 193 member nations and vowed to 'never, ever give up' on the values for which the U.N. stands. Closing with emotion, he said 'Wherever I will be, whatever I will be doing, I will keep championing the conviction that peace is possible.'
