Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has declared the Gulf region is living through one of its most perilous moments, driven by the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran, and called for an immediate return to diplomacy to avert further escalation.
Diplomacy as the Only Path Forward
Sheikh Tamim told the United Nations General Assembly that the crisis can be resolved through diplomatic means, specifically by reopening the Strait of Hormuz to maritime navigation to prevent war. He stated that Qatar is doing everything in its power to address the conflict through dialogue while remaining steadfast in defending its territory and sovereignty.
The Emir described the war on Iran as the cumulative result of years of postponing diplomatic resolutions, warning that without a regional system of collective security, the conditions for such a conflict have become possible.
Condemnation of Israel and Gaza
Sheikh Tamim sharply criticised Israel for its aggression in the occupied West Bank and Gaza, noting that attacks have expanded to neighbouring countries and are affecting the security of the region as a whole. He stated that there can be no talk of a just international order as long as Palestine remains in its plight.
In a powerful statement, the Emir declared that what has transpired in Gaza is genocide in every sense of the word, underscoring Qatar's unwavering stance on the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the Palestinian territories.
Support for Regional Sovereignty and Stability
Qatar expressed its support for Lebanon, Sudan and Libya, calling for the preservation of state sovereignty across the region. The Emir also voiced backing for United Nations efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive political settlement in Yemen based on the outcomes of the national dialogue facilitated by the UN.
These remarks highlight Qatar's continued role as a trusted mediator, seeking to preserve regional unity and achieve security and stability through multilateral frameworks and diplomatic engagement.
