Ed Sheeran spoke out on the Israel-Palestine conflict during his Philadelphia concert on Saturday, marking the first performance since rapper Macklemore was removed from his US Loop Tour over pro-Palestinian remarks.
Sheeran Condemns War and Settlement Expansion
Performing at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran described the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack that killed around 1,200 people as 'horrific.' He also characterised Israel's subsequent war in Gaza, which killed more than 70,000 people, as 'catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate.'
The singer further condemned the 'systemic injustice' in the occupied West Bank, where the Israeli government is pushing to expand Jewish settlements, which the United Nations has called a 'flagrant violation of international law.'
Sheeran Defends Himself Amid Backlash
Sheeran said he 'doesn't want to disappoint fans, and I've never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet.' He also said, 'I've had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I'm so, so sorry.'
This statement marked a reversal from his earlier Instagram post, where he said his concert audiences 'do not expect a political forum.' The controversy began after Macklemore said 'Free Palestine' at the opening of the tour in New Jersey in early September, prompting venues to threaten cancellation.
Protesters Rally and Boycott Calls Emerge
Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters rallied peacefully outside Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field before the concert, waving Palestinian flags and chanting 'Free, free Palestine.' Among them was 18-year-old Brandon Ateke, who accused Sheeran of 'complicity' with Robert Kraft and others in silencing Macklemore.
Ateke told AFP, 'I decided to not attend the concert and instead attend the protest to bring light to the genocide going on in Gaza today.' The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) has also called for a boycott of Sheeran's world tour.
