Dale Sanders, known on the trail as Grey Beard, has reclaimed the title of the oldest person to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail at age 91, completing the 2,193-mile journey after a grueling comeback that included 71 falls.
A Decade of Trail Records
Sanders first set the record in 2017 at age 82, but his friend M.J. Eberhart, the Nimblewill Nomad, took the title four years later at 83. Undeterred, Sanders announced his plan to reclaim the record and began training for six months near his home outside Memphis, Tennessee.
Born in Kentucky in 1935, Sanders served in the Navy and retired in 2002 after a long career in parks and recreation. He has also set other age-related records, including paddling the entire Mississippi River over 87 days starting on his 87th birthday.
Falls, Hospital Visits, and a Wife's Persuasion
Sanders fell 71 times during his hike, with seven classified as hard falls, including one that required a brief hospitalization and another just 200 yards from the finish. After a fall in Vermont left his arm numb and doctors feared a stroke, he considered quitting and returned home in early August.
His wife convinced him to continue after her mother had just died. Sanders said, 'Thank God nothing got broken, but I was banged up. I didn't rub the blood off, I just kept hiking.' He started his hike on September 6 in West Virginia and finished Monday atop Mount Katahdin in Maine.
Inspiring Fellow Hikers and Expanding His Mission
Sanders' mobility and fitness surprised fellow hikers, including Meredith Ewenson, who said, 'My first thought was 'Wow, his mobility is insane.' His face on that body just doesn't make any sense.' He performed a victory dance before continuing his hike after being cheered by fellow hikers.
Thousands now follow him on social media, and Sanders has expanded his mission beyond reclaiming his record. He said, 'Right now, what's the most important thing is that people are motivated and given encouragement by my efforts.'
