Russian drones struck Zaporizhzhia on Monday, hitting residential blocks, a university and a shopping mall, and wounding five people, a day after Kyiv fired more than 1,000 drones at Russia during a weekend offensive.
Zaporizhzhia Under Fire
Russian forces targeted Ukraine's southern city of Zaporizhzhia late on Sunday, damaging apartment blocks, a university and a shopping mall, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The strikes wounded five people and came as part of a broader campaign that also hit nine other Ukrainian regions.
Zelenskyy said on social media that Russia is not backing down from its escalation and is sending many signals that it is ready to expand the war. He added that the UN General Assembly would be the venue to discuss how peace can be achieved through joint efforts.
Drones and Defences Clash
The Russian Defence Ministry said its air defences downed 244 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions and the Black Sea overnight. Meanwhile, Ukraine's air force reported shooting down or suppressing 148 Russian drones in a separate overnight attack.
The weekend drone offensive by Kyiv included hundreds aimed at Moscow as voters cast ballots in the third and final day of a parliamentary election. The attacks underscored the absence of any significant progress in diplomatic efforts to stop the fighting, more than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion.
Moldova Reports Drone Incursion
Moldova's Ministry of Defence said part of its northern airspace was temporarily closed after surveillance systems detected an aerial object entering its territory shortly after midnight. Drone debris has been found on Moldova's soil in recent weeks, and its airspace has been violated multiple times.
It was not clear whether the drones that entered Moldova's airspace were Russian or Ukrainian, though officials have often blamed Moscow. Pro-Western President Maia Sandu said Moscow's brutal war is reaching our border, following Russian strikes along Moldova's frontier with Ukraine.
