Colombian authorities have declared a public calamity as a wildfire raged through the mountains surrounding Villa de Leyva, a popular colonial tourist destination in the north-east of the country. By Sunday evening, nearly 290 hectares had been scorched, and the blaze was reported to be about 50% under control.
Emergency Response and Evacuations
More than 400 firefighters, emergency workers, residents and volunteers joined the response effort, supported by four helicopters that dropped water on the flames. Aircraft carried out approximately 170 water drops on Sunday, releasing 240,000 liters of water to combat the blaze.
Strong winds have complicated containment efforts, with the fire at times advancing toward populated areas. Local authorities suspended in-person classes on Monday and carried out preventive evacuations, including at hotels near the fire.
National Fire Situation and El Niño Risk
Colombia's national disaster management agency is monitoring 27 forest fires, with 19 still active and eight under control. Nine of the active fires are in Tolima, a mountainous region south-west of Bogotá, while 279 municipalities are under some level of wildfire warning.
Between 16 June and 6 August, Colombia recorded 438 forest fires in 191 municipalities, affecting about 7,153 hectares of vegetation. Disaster officials say the period of greatest risk from the developing El Niño is expected between October and April.
Possible Arson and Regional Context
Fabio Arjona, Colombia's environment minister, said preliminary information suggested the fire may have been deliberately started, though authorities are still investigating. President Abelardo de la Espriella confirmed the Villa de Leyva fire was about 50% controlled and contained on the ground.
Neighbouring Ecuador is also battling wildfires, with 12 active fires and more than 21,800 hectares burned so far this year. A fire on the slopes of Ecuador's Imbabura volcano burned about 300 hectares before being brought under control after three days of firefighting.
