As the 81st UN General Assembly convenes in New York, Caritas Internationalis is calling on Member States to fully fund the UN's 87 Million Lives appeal and reverse cuts to overseas development assistance, warning that around 350 million people worldwide face urgent life-saving needs this year.
The Funding Gap and the 87 Million Lives Appeal
Caritas Secretary General Alistair Dutton warned that the 87 million people covered by the UN appeal represent only the tip of the iceberg, with some 300 million more in urgent need of life-saving assistance. He stressed that cuts to overseas development assistance must be reversed and governments must restore their commitment to spending 0.7% of GNI on development.
The Caritas representatives in New York joined Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, for Mass alongside colleagues and partners gathered for the UN General Assembly, underscoring the gravity of the humanitarian crisis unfolding globally.
Peacebuilding and Local Communities at the Heart of Response
Dutton emphasised that peacebuilding, development and humanitarian assistance are among the most effective tools to prevent conflict, reduce forced displacement and terrorism, and build peace. He noted that very few people want to leave their homes and that the priority should be making it possible for people to stay safely in the communities and lands they call home.
Caritas is calling on Member States to provide direct, flexible and multi-year financing to local and national actors, with their meaningful participation in humanitarian planning and decision-making, ensuring that national responders embedded in communities remain central to the global response.
Wider UNGA Engagement on Debt, Localisation and Protection
At a debate hosted by Devex Impact House on 21 September, Alfonso Apicella, Senior Advocacy Campaigns Manager at Caritas Internationalis, joined an important discussion on debt, stressing how global financial systems affect people's access to care and basic services.
Through these discussions, Caritas is bringing the experience of its Confederation and its members to the global policy debate, participating in several side events on debt relief, humanitarian financing, localisation, peacebuilding, International Humanitarian Law and the protection of humanitarian personnel.
