King Haakon VIII became Norway's monarch upon the death of his father, King Harald V, who passed away on Friday at the age of 89. The 35-year reign of Harald V concluded with his passing, and Haakon, now 53, has assumed the role of the nation's head of state.
The transition was announced officially by Speaker Masud Gharahkhani in parliament, who read the formal declaration of Harald's death and Haakon's succession. The new king was driven from the royal palace to the Storting in an open car, symbolizing the continuity of Norway's royal tradition.
The Oath and Norway's Royal Heritage
In parliament, King Haakon VIII pledged his allegiance to the country's constitution, stating: 'I promise and swear that I will govern the Kingdom of Norway in accordance with its Constitution and Laws; so help me God, the Almighty and Omniscient.' He also adopted the motto 'All for Norway,' a tradition dating back to his great-grandfather, Haakon VII.
Norway's monarchy traces its origins to King Harald Fairhair in the ninth century. King Harald V's coffin was taken to the chapel of the royal palace in downtown Oslo on Monday, where it will remain until his funeral on 9 September. Queen Mette-Marit joined the coffin procession on Monday in her first official appearance since assuming the title.
