The Federal Government of Somalia and Qatar's University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) have signed a cooperation agreement in Doha to establish Somalia's Technology University, a venture aimed at delivering high-quality technical and vocational education to the country's youth.
Partnership Details and Signatories
The agreement was signed in Doha by Director General of Higher Education Mohamed Abdullahi Mahmoud on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education, while Prof. Rashid Benlamri, Vice President for Education at UDST, signed for the university side.
The signing ceremony was attended by Somalia's Minister of Education, Culture and Higher Education, Somalia's Ambassador to Qatar and senior officials from UDST, marking a significant step in bilateral educational cooperation between the two nations.
Scope and Academic Focus
Under the partnership, UDST will support the development of curricula, teacher training, quality assurance and certification, with the first phase focusing on technology, marine sciences, aviation, petroleum, engineering, energy and health management.
Particular emphasis will be placed on training Somali teachers who will contribute to the administration and academic workforce of the new university, ensuring local capacity is built alongside international expertise.
Strategic Alignment and Broader Goals
The initiative forms part of Somalia's National Transformation Plan 2025–2029 and seeks to improve the quality of education while developing skills aligned with the needs of the labour market.
The Ministry expressed appreciation to the Government and people of Qatar for their continued support and cooperation with Somalia, underscoring the diplomatic and developmental significance of the partnership.
