OpenAI and Anthropic Cited Internal Causes
OpenAI spokesperson Kathleen Chaykowski told WIRED that a routing error beginning at 7:43 am PT on Thursday, September 3, rendered ChatGPT and Codex unavailable for some users across platforms. By 8:17 am PT, the company said a solution had been successfully implemented and was under continued monitoring.
Anthropic, meanwhile, declined to comment on the episode but began alerting users about a partial outage at 6:23 am PT involving elevated errors on Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Fable 5.1, and Claude Opus 5. The company later stated it had identified the cause and deployed a fix, marking the issue resolved by 9:16 am PT. Neither company pointed to an external source for the disruption.
xAI Blamed a Memphis Compute Center Failure
xAI reported Grok outages across all platforms beginning at 6:30 am PT, posting an 'investigating outage' notice on its service status page. The company later stated that Grok was experiencing issues and was working to restore service as quickly as possible.
SpaceX, xAI's parent company, said the issues resulted from 'an outage at our Memphis compute center this morning' and apologized to impacted compute partners. The episode was marked complete at 10:05 am PT, with xAI writing that traffic was healthy again. Anthropic and xAI had announced a compute partnership with SpaceX in May.
No Shared Infrastructure Failure Confirmed
Although simultaneous outages in the same sector often suggest a cloud provider, content delivery network, or third-party vendor issue, no shared cause was identified. Major infrastructure players including Cloudflare, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure did not report outages on Thursday.
Scattered reports of a possible Google Gemini outage emerged, but the company did not confirm the incident or record it on its service status dashboard. Google also did not respond to WIRED's request for comment ahead of publication. The lack of a confirmed common cause leaves the precise origin of the disruptions unclear.
