Professor Yoshua Bengio, a co-chair of the UN's Scientific Panel on AI, has issued a stark warning to world leaders as they gather in New York, calling for urgent global cooperation on artificial intelligence after US President Donald Trump dismissed safety concerns as a hoax.
Trump Rejects International AI Safeguards
During a speech to the UN General Assembly, President Trump rejected a joint statement from 22 countries, including Australia, which called for humans to remain in control of AI. The US stated it totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control the artificial intelligence being spoken of so much now.
Professor Bengio, who will address the UN Security Council overnight, said the plea from the 22 countries is extraordinary and important. He argued that it should not be the decisions of just a few CEOs or a few governments to figure out what is good for humanity.
Dangers of Recursive Self-Improvement
Professor Bengio warned that the greatest dangers posed by AI come from recursive self-improvement being developed by the world's leading tech companies. He said imagine we have an AI that is smarter than us, so it is able to do that research and engineering all by itself, which could design an AI that will be even more powerful than itself and even less controllable.
He described this trajectory as a recipe for suicide and said the forces of competition between companies and countries is not healthy. He added that it is an international question because those powerful AIs, if we lose control of them, that is going to affect all of us.
Call for Global Coalition on AI
Professor Bengio said the reason he is able to sleep at night and the reason why a country like Australia can make a difference is that we have agency right now. He urged more countries to join coalitions, putting their resources, minds, energy and talent together to bring the world into a place better aligned with values and democracy.
He noted that American AI companies are about six months ahead of their Chinese rivals but said it is reason enough to sit at a table with the Chinese because they are humans too. He called for an urgent mission for humanity so that humans remain in charge and human dignity flourishes at the centre of our choices.
