VMware has acknowledged that its flagship Cloud Foundation bundle has alienated many small-to-medium businesses, prompting a pledge to reintroduce an updated vSphere Standard edition soon.
The VCF Push and the vSphere Standard Gap
Since Broadcom acquired VMware, the company has concentrated heavily on VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), its flagship private-cloud bundle, which many SMBs find unaffordable and overloaded with unnecessary features. Paul Turner, VCF's chief product officer, admitted that VMware had 'too big a focus on VCF' and acknowledged that new sales incentives encouraged the team to steer customers toward the pricier offering.
Numerous customers have reported online that VMware sales representatives pushed them toward VCF, with some claiming that reps told them vSphere Standard was no longer available. Turner said the company was prioritizing improving VCF's security, while Ram Velaga, president of Broadcom's Infrastructure Software Group, said VMware prioritized VCF to promote private clouds as a more affordable alternative to the public cloud.
A Revival Pledged for October
VMware will release an 'updated version' of vSphere Standard 'soon,' with more details expected in October during VMware's Explore conference in Frankfurt. The last standalone update to vSphere Standard arrived in 2022, even though an updated version of vSphere was included with VCF 9 in 2025.
Velaga said that VMware prioritized VCF in an effort to promote private clouds as a more affordable alternative to the public cloud, which are easier to manage. 'People could get distracted' if VMware introduced a low-end virtualization product then, the executive said.
Eroded Trust and a Severed Partnership
The friction has damaged relationships with long-standing partners. Dean Colpitts, CTO of Members IT Group (MITG), told Ars that MITG is not doing any VMware business now and won't in the future.
VMware cut MITG from its reseller program after 19 years of partnership last year, a move that underscores the broader concern among SMBs that VMware has become too expensive and that trust, not features, is the real deficit.
