Wayve, a UK-based startup founded in 2017 by machine learning PhD students from the University of Cambridge, has developed its AV2.0 system which takes a different approach from traditional autonomous driving technology. The system uses a single, learned AI driver trained to understand the world, anticipate risk, and adapt to new environments, moving beyond the constraints of traditional AV systems that rely on hand-engineered stacks and HD maps.
The company claims its system is hardware agnostic, thanks to a software stack that can run on whatever sensors and chips an automaker uses for its vehicles. Earlier this year, Wayve raised $1.2 billion from Uber, Nvidia, Stellantis, Nissan, and Mercedes-Benz, demonstrating strong investor confidence in its technology and future prospects.
Uber's Strategic Vision for Robotaxi Expansion
Uber has been lobbying for a hybrid network made up of human drivers and robotaxis, which contrasts with Waymo's vision of a driver-free, rider-only system. The company has made significant efforts to partner with various autonomous vehicle companies, including Zoox, Avride, Nuro, Motional, Waabi, and Wayve, to build out its robotaxi business.
