TCL has launched the P80 Ultra, the first smartphone to combine its Nxtpaper e-reader technology with a high-end OLED screen. The device offers a dual-mode experience, functioning as a standard Android phone for most tasks and switching to a paper-like display for reading and focused use.
A Hybrid Display That Serves Two Purposes
The P80 Ultra features a 6.83-inch OLED panel with a 1.5K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 3,200 nits, covering 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. TCL argues that its anti-glare coating makes the display superior to some flagship phones, a claim supported by hands-on impressions at IFA.
For 90 percent of daily use, the phone operates as a regular Android device. However, activating the dedicated Nxtpaper Key switches the screen to Max Ink Mode, a monochromatic, paperlike interface with a custom UI, fewer notifications, and dedicated e-reader software.
Battery Life and Camera Specifications
Max Ink Mode extends the 5,800mAh battery to seven days of active use or up to 26 days of standby time. The device is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Elite chipset, includes 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage, and supports 45W wired charging.
The camera system includes a 50-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 50-megapixel 3x telephoto lens. While the main camera is described as fairly capable, TCL's image processing is noted to lag behind that of larger competitors.
Pricing, Availability, and Software Support
The P80 Ultra starts at €549 (about $635), with the P80 Pro available from €429 ($500) and the base P80 from €349 ($400). All three models launch in Europe today, with a Latin American release scheduled for October and a US arrival following later.
All phones run Android 16. The Ultra and Pro will receive four years of OS updates and seven years of security support, while the base P80 receives one fewer Android version update. The P80 Ultra is positioned in the upper midrange market.
