Suno v6 marks a significant shift for the AI music startup, which says the model is not trained on the same data used for earlier versions. The new lineup offers greater creative flexibility, allowing users to edit parts of a song via prompts or lyrics, and to use text, images, or video as references to generate tracks. Suno also plans to add features like song remixing, provided artists opt in through a new program with music labels.

Jack Brody, Suno's chief product officer, told TechCrunch that the release aims to create additional revenue streams for rights holders and artists. The company also plans to add watermarks to generated songs and has introduced new download limits tied to account tiers to address streaming fraud and mass content exportation.
Despite these moves, Suno remains embroiled in legal disputes with Sony, Universal Music Group, and artist Jason Isbell, in addition to user lawsuits over security concerns. The announcement comes just a day after the company admitted to training its models using YouTube videos.
Settlements and Funding Highlight a Complex Landscape
Suno settled with Warner Music Group last year and struck a deal with BMG last month, while also facing continued pressure from other labels. The startup has raised over $819 million in funding to date, according to PitchBook data, underscoring its financial resilience despite the controversies.
Brody emphasized that derivative works present more opportunity for revenue generation across the music ecosystem. He noted that while Suno can help manage broader challenges like streaming fraud, it is ultimately up to distributors and platforms to govern what content appears on their services.
