The Federal Government of Somalia and the State of Qatar have signed a cooperation agreement in Doxa, laying the groundwork for the construction of the Somalia Technology University (TUS University). The deal, between Somalia's Ministry of Education and the Doxa University of Science and Technology (UDST), will see Qatar support the implementation of the new project, which aims to deliver high-quality technical and vocational education.
Agreement Details and Institutional Roles
The agreement was signed at a ceremony attended by Somalia's Minister of Education, the Somali Ambassador to Qatar, and senior officials from UDST. The Ministry of Education will work alongside UDST to ensure the project's success, with Qatar providing the necessary support for implementation.
UDST will play a key role in curriculum development, teacher training, quality assurance, and the accreditation system. This institutional collaboration is designed to ensure that the new university meets international standards from its inception.
Focus Areas and Strategic Alignment
The first phase of the project will focus on specializations including technology, ocean science, aviation, petroleum, engineering, energy, and health management. These fields were selected to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in the Somali labor market.
The initiative is part of Somalia's National Transformation Plan 2025–2029, which aims to improve the quality of education and the skills needed for the workforce. Teacher training for Somali educators will also be prioritized, as they will form the backbone of the new university's academic operations.
Expected Impact on Youth and Economy
The project is expected to contribute to the growth of knowledge and skills among Somali youth, producing graduates who can meet the increasing needs of the job market. By focusing on technical and vocational training, the university aims to create a pipeline of skilled workers for key sectors.
