Sonos has announced a sweeping update to its ecosystem, introducing a new app built around generative AI, a redesigned soundbar, upgraded headphones and a rebranded operating system called Sonos 27.
A New App Built Around Generative AI
Sonos has launched a major update to its software, introducing Sonos 27voice, a generative AI integration that lets users talk to their speakers in a way similar to Amazon Alexa or Google Home. The feature is available in early access and allows listeners to request music based on their mood or connect to AI services like ChatGPT through a Model Context Protocol.
The company is also highlighting Sonos Custom Agents, which let users program speakers to perform specific tasks at set times and even change the AI voice to match a character, such as a French chef or a pirate. All AI features will be opt-in, giving users full control over whether they want to use them.
New Hardware: Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra Headphones
Sonos has introduced the Beam Ultra, a new soundbar featuring nine drivers, four more than previous models, including upward-firing drivers that bounce sound off the ceiling for improved acoustics. The device supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and wired HDMI eARC connections and includes AI speech enhancement to make dialogue clearer in loud scenes.
The company also unveiled the Sonos Ace Ultra, its second pair of over-ear headphones, which offer 35 hours of battery life and can connect to other Sonos speakers via Wi-Fi. The headphones run on Sonos Fabric, the network that syncs audio across rooms, and allow users to switch playback between speakers and headphones with a single button press.
Sonos 27 and the Shift Toward an Audio Operating System
Sonos is rebranding its entire ecosystem as Sonos 27, an audio operating system that will run on the S2 app but not the older S1 app, meaning owners of older hardware will not have access to the new AI features. The company says it does not want to be seen as a speaker company anymore, but as a more holistic audio platform.
Sonos Fabric is the official name for the network its products use to sync across rooms, and two new features are coming: portable surround, which lets users move devices between rooms while maintaining audio sync, and Headphone Linking, which allows switching audio between speakers and headphones. System health views will also be released this fall to help users diagnose connection issues.
