Samsung has fundamentally rethought how the Z Flip 8 should be used when closed, giving the 4-inch cover screen a full Android experience with an app drawer and optimized Quick Settings. Swiping down from the top left shows notifications, while swiping from the top right reveals a cover-screen-optimized Quick Settings panel, making the outer display feel more like a regular phone than ever before.
The app drawer, accessed by swiping up from the bottom, includes Samsung's own optimized apps plus a Labs section with third-party options like Netflix and WhatsApp. Samsung has also made MultiStar, the Good Lock module that lets users run any app on the outer screen, much more prominent than in previous models, though some apps like Withings and Google Maps remain difficult to use on the tiny display.
Hardware That's Almost Unchanged
The Z Flip 8 is 0.6mm thinner and 8g lighter than its predecessor, but the hardware remains largely a rehash of last year's model. The US version runs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, while the UK model uses the Exynos 2600, and the 4,300mAh silicon-carbon battery delivers reliable full-day life despite charging speeds of just 25W wired and 15W wireless.
The cameras are identical to the Z Flip 7, with a 50-megapixel main sensor, 12-megapixel ultrawide, and 10-megapixel inner camera. The IP48 rating means the phone is mostly safe from water but remains vulnerable to dust, and the price has increased to $1,199.99, a $100 hike over the Z Flip 7.
Friction as a Feature
While the new cover screen options feel genuinely freeing for quick tasks like checking Todoist or sending WhatsApp messages, the device's limitations are what make it special. Some apps simply don't work well on a screen this size, and that friction between the user and the distractions of their phone feels as much a feature as a bug.
The Z Fold 8's closed screen is more usable than the Z Flip 8's, but Samsung's move to close the gap between its foldable models is a turning point. The Z Flip 7 is likely to receive the upgraded software due to its similar outer screen, while the Z Flip 6 and earlier models with smaller displays seem more likely to miss out.
