The recent login requirement already helped reduce scraping and automated abuse, but Reddit noted it still allowed any logged-in account to access Old Reddit, including those with no prior usage history. Logged-in moderators will retain unrestricted access to the classic interface without needing to meet the recent usage requirement.
RSS Feeds End and API Access Phased Out
Reddit will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13th, citing that the format is now a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse. The company offered Discord Relay as a replacement for moderation-related feed use but acknowledged there is no substitute for RSS for users who rely on it for feeds outside of communities they moderate.
Separately, Reddit will begin removing API access for users who have not registered their apps by January 12th, with all remaining public API access set to end in March 2027. This transition is part of a larger move to shift apps and bots to Reddit's Developer Platform.
CEO Shifts Stance on Old Reddit's Future
In May 2025, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman stated the company would keep Old Reddit online as long as people were using it. However, by August, Huffman said the platform had reached a point where changes were necessary because the experience was being exploited by everyone who spams, scrapes, or does anything bad on Reddit.
Reddit has been waging war against unsanctioned access to its data for some time, including blocking the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine to prevent AI scraping, suing Anthropic over alleged unauthorized bot access, and striking deals with Google and OpenAI to use Reddit data for training.
