Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told a room of 250 tech founders in San Francisco that he does not have answers to many of the AI questions world leaders are debating privately, saying he sometimes feels 'we're already fighting yesterday's battle.'
A Candid Visit to Silicon Valley
Mitsotakis, who earned a master's degree at Stanford, arrived in San Francisco to promote Greece's economy and pitch the country to tech companies. He toured Tesla and Sequoia Capital before addressing the crowd at an Endeavor Greece event, framing the trip as both a fact-finding mission and a bridge-building effort ahead of his visit to the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
The prime minister made the economic case first, noting that Greece is paying down its debt at a record pace and borrowing more cheaply than the United States. He joked that he did not know if he should say this, but Greece's 10-year bond yield sits around 4.3%, compared with roughly 5% for U.S. Treasuries, a stark contrast to the 40% yields during the 2012 debt crisis.
Digital Investment and Policy Reforms
Mitsotakis highlighted how much of the roughly €36 billion Greece received from the EU's post-COVID recovery fund went into digital infrastructure, including an online portal for government paperwork and a new supercomputer in Lavrio built with Hewlett Packard Enterprise. He also listed policy changes such as revised stock option taxes, loosened labor laws, and lower taxes for returning Greeks for up to seven years.
The country is courting data center investment, with Microsoft building a cluster near Athens and AWS announcing a deal with Greece's largest utility to construct the nation's biggest data center in a former coal region. Mitsotakis said that despite global opposition to data centers, Greece has not had any significant reaction to these projects.
AI's Risks and the Need for Caution
When the conversation turned to AI's societal effects, Mitsotakis was refreshingly candid about not having a finished plan. Greece is instituting a ban on social media for children under 15 as of January 2027, but he suggested the ban may already be behind the times given the addictive nature of AI chatbots. He warned that students are already using chatbots to do homework, adding that 'complacency is a human trait.'
On job displacement, Mitsotakis said it 'is something which is going to happen, and no government and no society is prepared for the speed with which it will happen.' He sided with frontier lab leaders calling for slowing down AI development, noting that if the people building the models say 'we're not really sure exactly what's happening with these models,' then governments need to listen.
