American journalist Gil Durán has published a new book arguing that tech billionaires have cultivated an anti-democratic ideology for decades and now back an authoritarian administration. The Nerd Reich debuted as an instant New York Times bestseller after its release on August 18.
A Decades-Long Ideological Project
Durán's book describes how anti-democratic, anti-government, and aggressively anti-tax ideas were fused and incubated in Silicon Valley in the 1980s and 1990s. Influential figures began describing democracy as a flawed operating system that had to be replaced by a corporate dictatorship.
The book 'The Sovereign Individual' (1999) inspired a generation of new tech entrepreneurs to build technology to start undermining national governments and their currencies. In 1999, Peter Thiel predicted that official Washington D.C. would be too dumb to understand the encryption technology emerging out of Silicon Valley.
Tech Giants Back an Authoritarian Administration
In 2025, many of Silicon Valley's most well-known figures chose to openly ally themselves with a president who would soon check every box in the authoritarian playbook. Tech giants lavished money and support on the administration instead of filing lawsuits against it.
