OpenAI has expanded its GPT-6 lineup with refreshed versions of the Sol and Luna models, promising half the price of the previous generation and roughly half the error rate on internal factuality checks.
A New Generation of Smaller Models
Following the launch of GPT-6 Astra earlier this month, OpenAI is now rolling out updated versions of its smaller Sol and Luna models, which were first introduced earlier this year. The company says these updates extend the benefits of Astra by making that intelligence more efficient and accessible for a wider range of users.
Sol is built for complex work such as coding, while Luna is aimed at high-volume clerical tasks like summarizing documents, extracting information, or answering quick questions. OpenAI describes the pair as different tiers within its broader model hierarchy, each optimized for distinct use cases.
Half the Price, Fewer Mistakes
OpenAI says the new 6-series models will cost half as much as the 5.6-series versions of Sol and Luna, attributing the price drop to improvements in caching and inference. On internal factuality evaluations based on de-identified real-world conversations, GPT-6 Sol makes about half as many mistakes as its predecessor, reaching Astra-level reliability at a much lower cost.
The company also claims that GPT-6 Sol reaches Astra-level reliability at much lower cost, and that both Sol and Luna handle tasks substantially better than Anthropic's top models, including Fable and Opus.
Availability and Competitive Timing
The updated Sol and Luna models are now available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for most paid accounts, as well as through the ChatGPT API. Luna will also be accessible in the desktop app and for Free and Go users, with OpenAI expecting a gradual rollout to the main ChatGPT app and website throughout the day.
