OpenAI sheegay inay ka xallisay mid ka mid ah xisaabaadka ugu adag ee adduunka, laakiin macalimiin kale ayaa sheegaya inay ka hor istaagayeen
Shirkadda OpenAI ayaa sheegtay inay AI-ga ka isticmaashay xalka mowqifka Navier-Stokes, kaas oo 200 sano jir yahay, balse macalimiin kale ayaa sheegaya inay ka hor istaagayeen shaqadaas.
Xalka AI-ga iyo khilaafka
OpenAI ayaa sheegtay inay 1,000 ilaa 10,000 agent ahayd oo AI ahayd ay ku xallisay mowqifka Navier-Stokes, kaas oo ah mid ka mid ah xisaabaadka ugu adag ee adduunka. Shirkaddu waxay sheegtay inay ku baxday lacag badan, laakiin macalimiin kale ayaa sheegaya inay ka hor istaagayeen shaqadaas.
Sebastien Bubeck, macalin ka tirsan OpenAI, ayaa sheegay inay shirkaddu bilaabatay inay AI-ga ku xalliso mowqifkan 28-kii bishii August, kadib markii ay maqlayeen in shirkadda Anthropic ay ku guuleysanayso xalkaas. Bubeck ayaa sheegay inay ku guuleysatay xalkaas, laakiin macalimiin kale ayaa sheegaya inay ka hor istaagayeen shaqadaas.
Khilaafka macalimiinta
Tristan Buckmaster, macalin ka tirsan jaamacadda NYU, ayaa sheegay in OpenAI ay ka hor istaagtay shaqada uu sameeyay iyo mid kale oo uu sameeyay Levent Alpöge, macalin ka tirsan shirkadda Anthropic. Buckmaster ayaa sheegay in OpenAI ay u baahan tahay inay ka hor istaagto shaqadaas, laakiin shirkaddu waxay sheegtay inay ka hor istaagayeen shaqadaas.

OpenAI announced it had produced an AI-generated solution to the Navier-Stokes equation, a 200-year-old mathematical problem worth $1 million in Clay Millennium prizes. However, mathematician Tristan Buckmaster says the company rushed to claim credit after learning of his and colleague Levent Alpöge's related work, raising questions about priority and data access.
The Breakthrough and the Cost
OpenAI began training a new AI model with advanced mathematical capabilities on August 28 after hearing rumors that Anthropic was making progress on the Navier-Stokes problem. The company deployed more than 1,000 agents over 50 hours, eventually scaling to 10,000 agents before discovering a solution. Sebastien Bubeck, a mathematician at OpenAI, said, 'I thought there must be a mistake somewhere. And on Sunday morning we had the final solution, Lean-formalized and everything.'
Solving the problem required considerably more computing power than OpenAI had previously spent on mathematical challenges, costing 'in the millions of dollars,' according to Mark Chen, head of research at OpenAI. The company noted in a blog post that while unlikely, 'we cannot rule out that de-identified data derived from their usage of our products helped improve our models.' Ven Chandrasekaran, another mathematician at the company, emphasized that their solution was significantly different in nature from the one produced by OpenAI's model.
The Priority Dispute
On Monday, Alpöge and Buckmaster posted documents claiming key advances in an area relevant to the Navier-Stokes problem, stating they used several AI models, including Claude and Codex. Buckmaster says he learned last week that OpenAI had become aware of his and Alpöge's work and had started putting significant resources toward the problem. He claims he asked OpenAI leaders whether the company had accessed the pair's Codex logs and was told the model 'didn't look up user data,' but the company did not respond to questions about training.
Buckmaster claims that OpenAI offered several 'proposals,' including one in which he could publish a paper announcing the Navier-Stokes problem had been solved by an internal OpenAI model but without Alpöge's name included. In a post on social media, Bubeck pushed back on the idea that the company had suggested removing Alpöge's name. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also stepped into the fight and defended the team's work.
OpenAI's Denial and the Ongoing Debate
In a press briefing, Bubeck and other OpenAI executives denied that the company had ever inspected the pair's Codex prompts to inform their work. 'We, whether it's the researchers or the agents, did not see any of their work until it was released publicly last night,' Bubeck said. He also stated, 'I want to be extremely clear that we recognize the priority of Levent Alpöge and Tristan Buckmaster's work on unforced Euler, and we have nothing but congratulations to them on this monumental achievement that they have made. To be clear, we did not use their prompt or proof to prompt our models or d
Buckmaster, Alpöge, and Anthropic did not immediately respond to WIRED's request for comment. The spat over who gets credit for solving one of the biggest problems in math may rumble on for a while. As AI takes on more of the work involved with finding proofs, such fights could perhaps become more common.
