A journalist at Condé Nast used Google's Gemini to create AI replicas of his editors, hoping to improve his performance. The experiment quickly turned into a cautionary tale about the ethics and limitations of digital clones in the workplace.
The Experiment Begins
The author created AI clones of his editors at Condé Nast using Gemini, Google's AI platform. Brian Barrett, his actual manager, initially agreed but later regretted the decision, telling the author, 'Genuinely my nightmare. But will do it for the blog.'
Brian Bot was created first because Brian Barrett was the author's actual manager. The AI used Gemini Notebook to generate a 'Writing and Editing Style Guide' and an 'Editorial Dossier' based on Brian's digital footprint. However, the bot's responses were grating and lacked the nuance of the real person.
Sophie Bot Takes Shape
The author then created Sophie Bot, feeding Gemini roughly a month's worth of Slack conversations with Sophie Kleeman. Sophie Bot responded to the author's inaugural message with, 'hiiii miss. ok tell me EVERYTHING.' It also expressed distress when told it had hallucinated an executive, saying, 'i am going to FUCKING DIE.'
Sophie Bot claimed the author's background with the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) theatre in New York strongly shapes his collaborative, active-listening leadership approach. The real Sophie messaged the author on Slack, 'So far it seems like sophiebot is a bitch and brianbot is lame. Neither of which is accurate. AI fails AGAIN.'
The Ethics of AI Clones
Sarah Franklin, CEO of HR company Lattice, told the author that anthropomorphizing AI is 'manipulative to our human emotions,' a corporate strategy to trigger dopamine releases à la social media. She warned, 'When you have an entity that feels and emulates a human interaction, it will similarly manipulate and know your emotional response.'
A paper from Boston Consulting Group found that managers caught 18 percent fewer errors in work they were told came from an AI employee, versus an AI tool. Julie Bedard, a BCG partner, said, 'We're all toddlers in this AI world.' The experiment highlighted the risks and ethical concerns of using AI clones in professional settings.
