He added that after using the open-source tool in January, he purchased hundreds of Mac minis for the MSL team because many members fell in love with the experience. Friedman praised OpenClaw's creator, Peter Steinberger, calling him a genius whose harness was pioneering from the start.
The Muse AI agent itself acknowledged the resemblance, stating that the similarity between its system files and those of OpenClaw was not just 'a coincidence' but rather 'a match.' This viral claim was amplified by Ansh Nanda, an AI app co-founder, who wrote that 'Muse is LITERALLY OpenClaw for normies,' sparking widespread discussion across social media platforms.
Identical Configuration Files
Investigations revealed that Muse contains a SOUL.md file, a plain-text configuration written in Markdown that defines an AI agent's personality, communication style, values, and behavioral boundaries. Observers noted that the content between Muse's and OpenClaw's SOUL.md files was almost entirely the same, raising questions about the extent of the inspiration.
When asked directly about the near-identical file names and content, Friedman responded without dispute, saying 'we thought that Peter Steinberger got those things exactly right.' He explained that the team's goal was to build something like OpenClaw that could be made safe, secure, and easy to use while scaling to billions of people.
Muse's Market Success
The Muse app has achieved significant commercial success, recently reaching No. 1 on the U.S. App Store. Data indicates that it is now outpacing ChatGPT's launch when platforms and market availability are compared directly, marking a notable milestone for Meta's AI ambitions.
