In a lengthy social media post on Saturday, Trump said he is creating an 'AI Force' and will appoint a new 'AI czar' to oversee the development of the nation's artificial intelligence industry. He likened the new group to his creation of the Space Force during his first term in office.
Trump described AI as 'the next Industrial Revolution' that would be key to the country's economic growth. He said, 'We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows!'
Downplaying AI Safety Concerns
Trump dismissed a safety researcher's warning that AI 'could kill all humans' within the next decade as a 'hoax.' During a phone call to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Trump said, 'The robots will not be taking over. The AI will not be taking over the rest of the world.'
David Sacks, who previously served as Trump's 'AI czar' before resigning earlier this year, now chairs the Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Sacks suggested fears AI could harm people are overblown, stating, 'I think this is becoming a panic.'
AI Data Centres and Geopolitical Competition
Trump blasted attacks on AI data centres, calling the facilities 'prestigious.' He said, 'Higher Salaries, Lower Taxes, and Safer Streets, was the result,' echoing remarks that communities that didn't want them would 'end up being backwards and poor.'
