Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called on world leaders to unite in regulating artificial intelligence, warning that no nation can manage the technology's risks alone and that the choices made now will shape the next decade.
Call for International Cooperation on AI Risks
Speaking on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Albanese argued that artificial intelligence can bring great good only if humans remain in control of it. He warned that the idea AI will create perfection is very misdirected and that leaving the technology unregulated would be a mistake similar to what happened with social media.
The Prime Minister said leaders have the power, agency and choice to shape AI in the interests of humanity. He stressed that the decisions made now will determine what happens for the next year and the next decade, urging nations to learn from past errors and act together.
Meetings with UK and Korean Leaders
Albanese held his first face-to-face meeting with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham at the UN General Assembly, where they discussed AUKUS as central to ties between Australia and the UK. Burnham complimented Albanese for his work on the teen social media ban, while Albanese joked about Burnham becoming a South Sydney NRL supporter.
He also met Korean President Lee Jae Myung at the Korean Permanent Mission to the United Nations, where Lee noted that Australia's help had stabilised Korea's energy market amid disruptions from the Strait of Hormuz conflict. Albanese thanked him and said the two nations are great friends who share a similar worldview.
Australia Promotes Digital Regulation and Age Ban
As co-host of the Coalition for Children's Rights and Protection in the Age of AI event, Albanese promoted Australia's social media age ban, noting more than 20 countries are considering similar laws. He argued that a coordinated global approach is essential to tackle risks such as child exploitation, biological weapons and rogue AI incidents.
