John Ternus, 51, has been appointed CEO of Apple, taking over from Tim Cook who will remain as executive chairman. Ternus, who has spent 25 years at the company, leads the hardware engineering division and previously oversaw the development of the AirPods, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro.
A Quarter-Century at Apple
Ternus joined Apple in 2001 as part of the product design team, making it his second job after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania's engineering school. He was promoted to vice president of hardware engineering in 2013 and to senior vice president in 2021, eventually leading all of Apple's hardware engineering operations.
His early work at Apple involved scrutinizing parts for the Apple Cinema Display, and he later led the hardware development behind major products including the AirPods, Apple Watch, and the Vision Pro. He also played a key role in Apple's transition from Intel chips to its own proprietary Apple silicon.
First Day as CEO
On his first day as CEO, Ternus sent a staff memo expressing gratitude to Tim Cook and highlighting upcoming product launches. He described Apple as 'the greatest company in the world' and hinted at 'incredible products already in the works and the ones we haven't even imagined yet.'
The memo also mentioned potential future products including camera-equipped AirPods, home robots, and more OLED displays. Ternus said, 'We never want to ship junk. We want to ship great products that have that Apple experience, that Apple quality.'
Looking Ahead
Apple is set to host its iPhone launch event on September 9th, and Ternus expressed excitement about the upcoming launch. He also noted that Apple will roll out a new Siri AI experience powered by Google's Gemini, signaling the company's continued push into artificial intelligence.
Ternus previously reported to Tim Cook, whom he considers a mentor, and Cook praised his successor in his farewell message. The appointment marks only the second CEO change at Apple in this millennium, underscoring the company's focus on leadership continuity.
