Jaguar Land Rover has unveiled the 2027 Range Rover Electric, a factory-built battery-electric variant that marks the brand's first purpose-designed electric SUV. Starting at $138,000, the vehicle offers a modern alternative to the costly restomod conversions that previously provided the only fully electric Range Rover experience.
A Factory-Built Electric Range Rover
Until now, the only way to get a fully electric Range Rover was by going the restomod route, a process that can be both expensive and mechanically compromised. The 2027 Range Rover Electric changes that equation by offering a purpose-built battery-electric vehicle that sits alongside the internal combustion and plug-in hybrid models in the lineup.
JLR reported that it already has 80,000 hand-raisers for the vehicle, with half of those registrations coming from North America. Notably, 70 percent of the hand-raisers are new to the brand, while 20 percent already own an electric vehicle, signaling strong interest from both existing and prospective customers.
Powertrain and Weight Efficiency
The vehicle is built on JLR's MLA architecture, which was designed over a decade ago to be powertrain agnostic. The battery-electric version weighs only 165 lbs (75 kg) more than the V8 model, as the removal of front, center, and rear differentials and driveshafts offsets the added weight of the battery and drive units.
The front and rear drive units are identical permanent-magnet synchronous motors, each producing 349 hp (260 kW). A front-induction motor was considered but dropped due to heat management concerns. Combined output reaches 542 hp (404 kW) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque.
Design and Market Positioning
The 2027 Range Rover Electric features a slightly more aerodynamic front grille and more aero-efficient wheels, while the absence of tailpipes remains the most obvious visual indicator of its electric powertrain. The vehicle also benefits from a flat underbody, contributing to improved aerodynamics and overall efficiency.
With a starting price of $138,000, the Range Rover Electric is approximately half the cost of a restomod conversion. It also brings 21st-century safety systems, including airbags, advanced driver assistance systems, and modern crash protection standards, alongside the support and warranty of a major original equipment manufacturer.
