Penalties for Unmarked AI Accounts
Instagram will now actively search for accounts that do not self-label their AI-generated profiles and will limit their reach as a consequence. Posts from penalised accounts will no longer be recommended to non-followers in Reels and Explore, effectively reducing their visibility to people who do not already follow them.
The platform also allows profile owners to appeal the decision if they believe they have been wrongly flagged. However, users who simply use AI tools to generate content are not required to add the label, meaning the new rules target only those presenting AI-generated personas as real people.
Leadership Pushes for Greater Transparency
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has described the move as the first step toward addressing the rise of deceptive AI-generated profiles on the platform. He acknowledged that audiences are increasingly uncomfortable discovering that a profile they thought was human is actually AI-generated after the fact.
The company stated that users want to know upfront when a profile features an AI-generated person, and it is taking action to ensure that transparency is built into the user experience. While the measures do not yet allow users to filter out all AI content, they represent a significant shift in how the platform handles artificial-intelligence-generated identities.
