Ahead of Schedule: Huawei Connect Announcement
David Wang, Huawei's rotating and acting chairman, revealed the accelerated timeline at Huawei Connect on Thursday. The Ascend 960DT is expected to be ready in Q1 2027, with Ascend 960 chips launching ahead of schedule, doubling performance and advancing year by year.
The announcement arrives just a week before U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to meet on September 24 in Washington, DC, adding a layer of geopolitical significance to Huawei's strategic move.
Peerium Architecture and Scaling Ambitions
Huawei is building toward a system that can connect up to 256,000 accelerator cards through its Peerium Computing Architecture, which relies on UnifiedBus technology to link processors with memory, storage, and networking hardware. The Atlas 950 SuperPoD and SuperCluster are the first systems based on this architecture.
However, China tech analyst Rui Ma noted that while the chip timeline has accelerated, the announced Atlas 960 SuperPoD system is smaller than originally planned, with 4,096 chips instead of the previously stated 15,488, raising questions about the broader system's scale.
Geopolitical Context and AI Safety Debate
Huawei has continued to advance its chip ambitions despite U.S. restrictions on China's access to advanced semiconductor technology. Analyst Rui Ma stated that it is futile to stop China's development in semiconductors because the stakes for self-sufficiency are just too high at this point.
