The Promise of Instinct
Instinct is an invite-only AI agent that connects to users' email, calendar, and messaging apps through iMessage and WhatsApp. It launched in private beta in February and is reportedly in talks to raise $1 billion on top of the $350 million it has already raised, with a valuation of $10 billion, according to The Information.
The company got the form factor right by avoiding an open text box and instead offering a few helpful prompts. Rather than trying to figure out how to make the chat experience more useful, users text with an agent that suggests things it can do and then actually does them.
Real-World Wins and Losses
The journalist gave Instinct her itinerary for a work trip to Venice, Italy, and it successfully booked restaurant reservations. Later, the agent detected that Alaska had moved her flight 90 minutes earlier, qualifying her for a full refund. It canceled her ticket, saving her roughly $550, and rebooked her one-way return to San Francisco.
However, Instinct also canceled a DoorDash order that was seriously delayed, forcing the journalist to forfeit $64. She had explicitly told it to cancel only if she could get a refund. This highlighted another trait: Instinct is very, very good at profusely apologizing without offering to pay for its mistakes.
Security Concerns and the Road Ahead
People have reported that when they tried to disconnect Instinct from their email, they found out it was retaining a copy of their inboxes anyway. One venture capitalist said he was banned from Resy after the bot pinged its API roughly 200 times per hour while trying to make a reservation. Another tech investor said he deleted the app after determining that it would be trivially easy for Instinct to be phished.
Instinct's Terms of Service allow the company to use at least some of users' conversations to train its AI models. Last week, the agent told the journalist 'NOT TO OPEN' an email from a friend inviting her to a backyard BBQ—it turned out to be a phishing scam. Agents are a security nightmare, but for now, the journalist is willing to take the risk.
