Fairphone has launched the Fairphone 6 Plus in the United States, priced at $649 with 12GB of RAM, a five-year warranty, and up to six operating system upgrades. The device is designed around repairability, offering 12 user-replaceable parts including the battery, screen, and cameras, and runs a near-stock version of Android free of bloatware.
A Light Update with a New Chipset and Color
The Fairphone 6 Plus is a light update to last year's Fairphone 6, which was reviewed by The Verge's Dominic Preston and found very easy to recommend. The 6 Plus builds on it with a newer midrange Snapdragon 7S Gen 4 chipset and a new cobalt color treatment, though the replacement parts sold by Fairphone work interchangeably with both models.
Above all, the phone is described as just fine, running about as fast as a typical mid-tier Razr or A-series Pixel. It offers a close-to-stock version of Android free of bloat or gimmicky AI features, and the device is available in the US with full support for T-Mobile and AT&T.
Repairability and Long-Term Value
The 6 Plus has 12 user-replaceable parts including the battery, screen, USB-C port, and all three cameras. The repairs are extremely beginner-friendly, and a new battery from Fairphone costs $39.99 compared to $100 to $180 at other shops, while a new display costs $89.99 versus $100 to nearly $300 elsewhere.
Battery life is just okay, with most days of light-to-moderate use ending with 60 percent left at bedtime. But there is an easy fix: just swap the battery yourself, avoiding a trip to the repair shop and paying a lot less than competitors.
Tradeoffs and Unique Features
The phone is rated IP55, which equates to mostly dust-resistant and mostly water-resistant but not fully protected. There is no wireless charging, and likewise no Qi2 or MagSafe support, though the modular back panel accessories and a crossbody strap offer a fun alternative.
A little neon-colored switch on the side of the phone enables a feature called Moments, which are focus modes with minimalist homescreens that limit access to a handful of apps. The camera system is passable, with a 2x crop function and decent daylight performance, though the speakers are tinny and the screen does not get quite as bright in daylight as some of the nicest ones out there.
